Hi, I’m Ryo, the person behind Small Stops Japan. I live in Fukushima City, Japan, with my family.
I enjoy food, exploring shops, visiting shrines, and finding places where children can play. These everyday interests are the starting point for this site.
Small things, new discoveries
How does a rice paddle go from the rice cooker to the bowl? What happens around a school desk during the day? What does a label on a box of peaches mean?
Small Stops Japan explores one object, question, or everyday scene at a time. Pictures show things in use and in their surroundings, while clear explanations make unfamiliar details easier to understand.
The subject might be food, a useful tool, a local place, or a cultural interest. The aim is to make a small part of Japan feel a little closer.
Starting in Fukushima City
Fukushima City is where my family and I live, and it gives this site a local starting point. Alongside stories from across Japan, there is room here for the food, shops, and ordinary scenes of Fukushima.
If the name Fukushima brings news reports to mind, I hope these everyday details add another part of the picture. The city and the wider prefecture are different in scale, and an example from one place does not describe the whole region.

For curiosity—and a little more confidence
You do not need to be planning a trip. Learning how something works can be enjoyable in itself. If you do visit Japan, understanding an ordinary situation—such as ordering a meal or reading a shop label—may make it easier to take that first step.
I hope you leave with a small discovery, a question answered, or a place you would like to know better.
Experience, research, and questions
Personal experiences are distinguished from researched information. A first-person account describes something I have actually done; research alone is never presented as a visit or a personal memory.
